HEADERS AND FOOTERS

TO INSERT A HEADER:

1) To put the header in the “Header” part of the document, click on View, then on Header and Footer.

2) Type a header in the box that pops up at the top of the document. To move the header to the center or right, click on the Center Align or Right Align button at the top of the window.

3) To close the header part of the document and return to the bottom main part of the document, click on the Close button on the Header and Footer Button Bar that appears on the screen when you click on View, then on Header and Footer.

4) You can always return to the Header area (which is normally grayed out) to change the text by double-clicking on the text in the Header area.

5) To return to the main text area below (where you are typing a letter, for example), you can double-click anywhere in the text area below (which will be grayed out when you are typing text in the Header area).

TO INSERT A FOOTER:

1) Click on View, then on Header and Footer.

[2) Press the Down Arrow   ↓    on the keyboard once or twice (or three times) to move the blinking cursor down to the Footer area.]

3) Type your footer.

4) Click on the Close button on the Header and Footer Button Bar (or double-click back in the main text area of your document above).

TO INSERT PAGE NUMBERS:

1) Click on View, then on Header and Footer.

[2) Press the Down Arrow on the keyboard once or twice (or three times) to move the blinking cursor down to the Footer, if you want to insert the page numbers in the Footer.]

3) Click on the Insert Page Numbers button, which has the #  symbol on it  (or click on Insert, then on Page Numbers… at the top of the window).

4) Click on the Down Arrow button next to whatever is in the Alignment box, then click on Center or Right if you want to move the page numbers to the center or right.

4) Click on the Close button on the Header and Footer Button Bar, or double-click back in the main text area of the document.

TO HAVE A DIFFERENT FIRST PAGE HEADER OR FOOTER:

1) Click on File, then on Page Setup, then on the Layout  tab.

2) Click to put a check mark in the box next to:  ü Different first page.

3) Click on OK.

4) Then do one or more of the procedures above to insert a page number or some text. (You can now have a different header or footer on the first page.)
