BASIC MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER 7.0 INSTRUCTIONS

1) Type the web site address in the Address box, then click on the green Go button  ð, or press the Enter key on the keyboard.

Note: To open the web site you type in the Address box in a new tab window, hold down the Alt key, then press the Enter key (after you type the address).

2) If you see a link on the page that you want to open in a new tab window, do one of the following:

1) To open a link in a new tab window in the background (so that you can continue to read what’s on the current page), hold down the Ctrl key and click on the link on the page.

2) To open a link in a new tab window in the foreground (so you can read the new tab window as it downloads and appears), hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys as you click on the link.

3) You can also click on the squarish New Tab button (it has a picture of a blank web page with a golden asterisk in the upper right-hand corner) to the right of the wide tab button for the last page you opened. Type the address of the web page in the Address box, then click on the green Go button, or press the Enter key on the keyboard.

3) To close a tab, do one of the following:

1) To close a single tab, click once on the tiny X button in the upper right-hand corner of the tab.

2) Or to close a single tab, click once with the middle (wheel) button if you have a mouse that has a middle button or wheel.

3) Or right-click on a tab, then click on Close.

4) To close all tabs, do one of the following:

1) Click on the X button in the upper right-hand corner of the Internet Explorer 7.0 window, then click on the Close Tabs button.

2) Or you can right-click on one of the tabs, then click on Close Other Tabs.

3) Or hold down the Alt key and press the F4 key, which is along the upper row of keys on the keyboard.

5) To quickly switch between tabs, hold down the Ctrl key, then press the Tab key on the keyboard, or just click on the tabs.

TO CHANGE YOUR SEARCH PROVIDER (TO, FOR EXAMPLE, GOOGLE OR YAHOO):

1) Click on the tiny Down Arrow button 6 just to the right of the Magnifying Glass button  at the top of the Internet Explorer 7.0 window. 

2) Click on Change Search Defaults…

3) Click on the blue Find more providers… link at the bottom.

4) Click on AOL, Ask.com, Google, Live Search (Microsoft’s), Yahoo, or whatever search provider you want.

5) Under Do you want to add the following search provider to Internet Explorer?, click to put a check mark next to  ü Make this my default search provider (if you so wish), then click on the Add Provider button.

6) You should see the search provider’s name, such as Google, appear in the Search window at the upper right.

7) To search for something on the Internet, click into the Search box, then type in the search term(s), then press the Enter key on the keyboard, or click on the Magnifying Glass button .

TO CHANGE YOUR HOME PAGE:

1) Type the address of your desired home page in the Address box, then click on the green Go button  ð , or press the Enter key on the keyboard.

2) Click on the tiny Down Arrow  6 just to the right of the Home button (it has a picture of a tiny house on it).

3) Click on Add or Change Home Page…

4) Click to put a black dot next to:

¤ Use this webpage as your only home page.

¤ Add this webpage to your home page tabs, or

[¤ Use the current tab set as your home page.]

Note: You can have more than one home page pop up on the screen when you start Internet Explorer 7.0.

5) Click on the Yes button.

TO USE YOUR FAVORITES LIST:

1) Click on the tiny gold star button at the upper left-hand corner of the window.

2) Click on the Favorite that you want, such as eBay or MSNBC.

TO ADD A NEW FAVORITE:

1) Type the address of the web page that you want to add to your Favorites list in the Address box, then click on the green Go button ð (or press the Enter key on the keyboard).

2) Click on the tiny gold star button that has a plus sign [ + ] next to it. (This button is just to the right of the Favorites button discussed above.)

3) Click on Add to Favorites.

4) Type a name for the Favorite in the Name: box.

5) Click on the Down Arrow next to whatever is in the Create in: box, then click on Favorites or one of the custom folders you’ve created for your Favorites, such as Financial Web Sites or Music Web Sites. You can also click on the New Folder button, then create a new folder for this Favorite.

6) Click on the Add button.

TO PRINT A WEB PAGE:

1) Click on the tiny Down Arrow button  6 next to the Printer icon button at the upper right-hand corner of the window.

2) Click on Print Preview…  (It's generally a good idea to see a preview of the web page first to see how it’s going to print out on a piece of paper so you don’t waste any paper.)

3) Click on Shrink to Fit, then click on 125% or 80% or whatever size you want if you want to zoom in on a small section of the web page, or if you want to zoom out to include more of the web page. It is usually best, however, to leave it set to Shrink to Fit or click on the Landscape button (see # 5 below) if you want to print it out on regular letter-size paper.

4) Click on 1 Page View, then click on 2 Page View or 3 Page View, if you want to see how the other pages will look, or to see where the page divisions are, in a multi-page printout. (Or you can click on the Next Page button          at the bottom of the Print Preview window.)

5) Click on the Portrait or Landscape button depending on how you want to print the web page. (The Portrait button has a capital A on it with the page taller than wider. The Landscape button has a capital A on it with the page wider than taller.)

6) Click on the tiny Printer button at the far left, then click on Print.
