WINDOWS 7 INSTRUCTIONS

THE NEW TASKBAR:

Note: The Taskbar is the long bar at the bottom of the screen that contains the Start button and buttons for programs like Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer and Windows Media Player.

1) Move your mouse pointer on a button on the Taskbar to see all open windows associated with that program (for example, the Internet Explorer web browser–if you are viewing more than one web page).

2) You will then see medium-size previews or thumbnails of each window that is open appear right above that button.

3) Click once on the thumbnail of the window you want to open full-screen or nearly full-screen.

TO BRING UP THE “JUMP LIST” ON A TASKBAR BUTTON:

1) Right-click on the Taskbar button (for example, on the Internet Explorer button).

2) You will then see such commands as Unpin this program from the taskbar (if the program button is permanently on the Taskbar), Pin this program to taskbar (if it isn’t permanently on the Taskbar),Internet Explorer (which brings up the Internet Explorer program itself), a list of websites that you have recently visited with the Internet Explorer, and the Close window command.

TO COMPARE TWO WINDOWS SIDE-BY-SIDE:

1) Open one window (for example, open the Internet Explorer program).

2) Open another window (for example, the Microsoft Word program).

3) Click & drag the first window by its Title Bar (where it says, for example, MSNBC.com – Windows Internet Explorer) to the left edge of the screen. The window will automatically re-size to fit one-half of the screen on the left.

4) Click & drag the second window by its Title Bar (where it says, for example, Document 1 – Microsoft Word) to the right edge of the screen. The window will automatically re-size to fit one half of the screen on the right.

5) You can then compare items on both windows, or copy & paste text and/or pictures from the left window (Internet Explorer) to the right window (Microsoft Word).

Tip: To copy & paste text and/or pictures from one window to the other:

1) Click & drag over the text and/or picture.

2) Click on Edit at the top of the Internet Explorer window, then on Copy.

3) Click over into the blank Microsoft Word document to put the blinking cursor there.

4) Click on Edit at the top of the Microsoft Word window, then on Paste.

TO QUICKLY ”MAXIMIZE” A WINDOW TO FULL-SCREEN:

1) Click & drag the window by its Title Bar (where it says, for example, MSNBC.com – Windows Internet Explorer) to the top of the screen. The window should automatically fill the screen completely.

Note: This technique is faster than looking for the Maximize button on the, for example, Internet Explorer window and clicking on it.

TO QUICKLY “MINIMIZE” ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT ONE:

1) Click & rapidly shake the window by its Title Bar. All open windows except the one you are shaking should minimize down to their respective buttons on the Taskbar.

Tip: If you want to quickly minimize ALL of the open windows, hold down the Windows logo key and press M. (The Windows logo key is in between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the left side of the keyboard.)

THE NEW SHOW DESKTOP BUTTON:

1) To quickly make all of the open windows transparent so that you can see the icons on the desktop, move the mouse pointer to the small rectangular button at the far right on the Taskbar (at the bottom right of the screen).

2) Click once on this small rectangular button to quickly minimize all open windows to their respective buttons on the Taskbar.
