TO CHANGE THE SLEEP OR HIBERNATION SETTINGS (WINDOWS VISTA):

Note: This is how you can change when your monitor turns OFF, or when your computer goes to sleep or hibernates, which is a deeper sleep mode that saves even more electricity or prolongs your battery life.

Note 2: Be sure to change the sleep or hibernation setting to “Never” if you have problems waking up your computer. (Usually, you wake up your computer by pressing a mouse button or a key on the keyboard.)

Note 3: If you want to extend the life of your laptop battery, or save on your electric bill and reduce your carbon emissions and prevent the building of more power plants, leave the sleep or hibernation settings to the “default” settings, or click on ¤ Power Saver in step # 5 below.

1) Right-click on the desktop where there is no icon or button.

2) Click on Personalize.

3) Click on Screen Saver.

4) Click on Change power settings… at the bottom. 

5) Click on Change plan settings under  ¤ Balanced (or whichever Power setting is selected). [Click on the Down Arrow next to whatever is in the box next to Turn off the display, then click on the number of minutes you want, or click on Never if you want the monitor to always stay ON.]

6) Click on Change advanced power settings, then change the following settings (and the other settings under advanced power settings, if you wish):

Hard Disk:

1) Click on the tiny Plus sign [+] next to Hard disk.

2) Click on the Plus sign next to [+] Turn off hard disk after.

3) Click on 20 minutes (or whatever the Setting is).

4) Click on the Up or Down Arrow next to 20 minutes (or whatever the Setting is) to change the number of minutes to whatever you want, or change it to Never, if you don’t want the hard disk to ever stop spinning.

Sleep:

1) Click on the tiny Plus sign [+] next to Sleep.

2) Click on the Plus sign next to [+] Hibernate after.

3) Click on 20 minutes (or whatever the Setting is).

4) Click on the Up or Down Arrow next to 20 minutes (or whatever the Setting is) to change the number of minutes to whatever you want, or change it to Never, if you don’t want the computer to ever hibernate.

7) Click on OK.

8) Click on the Save Changes button, or click on the X button on that window if the Save Changes button is dim.

9) Click on OK.

10) Close the Personalize window by clicking on the X button in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
